A ‘Style Confident’ Mind-set

coach coaching confidence mindset organised style style confidence style identity style mindset Jan 11, 2024

Mind-set is a tricky thing to manage at times. Why?..

Because our mind-set is what controls our internal narratives, whether they be positive or negative. Our mind-set is built upon on our belief system. When our belief system is hindered or damaged, our self-talk and behaviours reflect this.

Is this triggered by something significant, or can it develop over time?

The answer, quite simply, is either.

It is possible that our mind-set can impact confidence around image and styling even when we experience the smallest and seemingly most insignificant change or experience. In fact, even the smallest and most seemingly trivial negativities within our mind-set can still have a greater impact on our style.

Consider the following scenario…

We all have days where getting dressed feels like an impossible task. Disinterest, chaotic mornings, and feelings of inadequacy can quickly take the joy out of self-expression and leave our style feeling uninspired. I

f you have found these words resonating with you, then let’s explore the following feelings further and the result they have:

  • Disinterest: When we lack motivation or enthusiasm, our wardrobe can feel old, repetitive, dull and uninspired. This can lead to wearing what we consider "default outfits" that have no reflection on our true selves or bring us the joy and confidence we ought to feel.
  • Chaotic mornings: When rushing out the door, thoughtful outfit choices often get thrown out the window. This can leave us feeling unprepared, a feeling of looking “thrown together” and ultimately undermine our confidence.
  • Inadequacy: Comparing ourselves to others can have lead to feelings of inadequacy and self-doubt, making it difficult to embrace our unique style and express ourselves authentically.

You may not realise it, but dealing with these hampering feelings day in, day out, will slowly chip away at your style confidence and over time, it becomes a vicious cycle.

How to redevelop a style confident mind-set?

  • Start small: Begin by focusing on one aspect of your style. This could be choosing an outfit that makes you feel comfortable and confident, or adding a pop of color or a statement piece.
  • Plan ahead: Taking a few minutes the night before to lay out your clothes can make a huge difference in the morning. This helps you avoid last-minute decisions and ensures you feel prepared and put-together.
  • Challenge your inner critic: Negative self-talk can be a major obstacle to embracing your style. Practice mindfulness and self-compassion, focusing on your strengths and unique qualities.
  • Celebrate small wins: Notice and appreciate even the smallest progress you make. This could be choosing an outfit that makes you feel good, experimenting with a new trend, or simply taking the time to care for your clothes.

Remember, finding your style identity and developing a style confident mind-set is a journey, not a destination.

There will be days when finding the right outfit feels effortless, and others where it may require more effort and intention. But by understanding the impact of disinterest, chaos, and inadequacy, and by implementing small, actionable steps, you can break free from these limitations and use style as a powerful tool for self-expression and empowerment.
